Warren Hess Citrus Grove (re-published)
[Editor's note: This entry was posted earlier, but got misplaced. I am, therefore, re-publishing it.]When the history of Marbella is written, Warren Hess (photo above) will be listed as one of its more interesting heroes. For seven years, Warren tirelessly served as our Landscape Chairman overseeing maintenance of the Greenbelt. In his honor, a small patch of troublesome turf in the northern Greenbelt was replaced with four lemon trees and a lime tree and designated the Warren Hess Citrus Orchard. The fruit it produces is free to residents.
Warren retired in 1982 after forty-one years as a Communications Engineer with Pacific Telephone. Some will be surprised to learn that he plays a mean trombone! In college days, he performed several years (1939-40-41) in the Tournament of Roses Parade marching band, and, also, for the visiting teams' bands at the games. He has continued playing the trombone as a hobby. During the “Big Band Era”, he played for several biggies in the Los Angeles area. Now, he volunteers in musical groups that provide dance music for Seniors. He plays on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Senior Center in Escondido, and on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 - 3:30 PM at the Seven Oaks Recreation Center right here in Rancho Bernardo. All are invited to put on their dancing shoes and join in the fun. He is a member of the Dixie Strutters Jazz Band that is on the July 4th Program in Old Poway Park this year at 10:30 AM.
